Solo sax twisted and battered into unorthodox shapes.
First released in 1992 on Butcher’s own ACTA label, this is an essential document for anyone passionate about, or even mildly inter- ested in, improvised music. Indeed, it's fair to say this set cut a new expressionist template for the saxophone. The sounds on the first track alone range from slab-like, low-voltage hums to clouds of didgeridoo hufling to the sounds of an old-skool mainframe breaking down. Butcher's background ln physics and electronic music has been a strong influence on his work, which is clearly evident from some of the manipulation on show here. Elsewhere, he multi- tracks his instrument. True, this is an acquired taste, but, once acquired, it's not lost.
